Providing Leadership Under Duress

Hey Champions!

Recently, I was privileged enough to witness a change of battalion command at Jackson Barracks for my friend, Lt. Col. Kenneth T. Baillie.

During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Baillie’s accomplishments were, of course, lauded. As commander, he took the Louisiana National Guard 1st Battalion, 141st Field Artillery Regiment, which had been in 32nd place out of 32 battalions across the United States to the #1 spot, where it remains to this day. These military men and women are the best of the best and are, without a doubt, prepared to defend our country and provide other auxiliary services in times of need. Under Lt. Col. Baillie’s leadership, this historic artillery battalion not only met expectations, they exceeded them.

After the ceremony, I had lunch with Lt. Col. Baillie and his family. His wife, Terri, remarked that her husband always “over-delivered.” This got me thinking. How did a man, who had the odds stacked against him when he began, maintain his composure and provide inspiring leadership?

The answer is simple. Focus. He had a clear goal in mind and he set out to achieve that goal, no matter what it took. He was handed the monumental task of bringing the battalion “up to speed.” Not only did he do that, he went above and beyond even what his superiors expected. Even under duress, Lt. Col. Baillie never wavered. He provided the leadership his command needed. In less than two years, the 1st Battalion now actually lived up to its name.

The takeaway from this is that no matter what industry you are in, when you are in a position of authority, there will always be times of duress. You may be in charge of a large division, you may have to report to superiors, you may have to meet stringent levels of accountability, and you may have to meet tight deadlines. Whether it’s on the battlefield, on the playing field, or in your field, as a leader, it’s up to you to maintain your composure and focus.

Until next time…

Keep Breaking Barriers,
John

Championship Minute – Forgiveness

Hey Champions!

This week’s Championship Minute is all about Forgiveness. What does it mean to forgive someone and why should we do it? Forgiveness isn’t about being right or wrong. It’s about finding inner peace. Watch this week’s video to hear my thoughts on forgiveness.

How to be a Better Communicator

Communicate Effectively

Hey Champions!

Whether it be business-related or personal, communication is key in getting your message across. What separates a great trial lawyer from the chaff is his ability to communicate his case to the jury. What makes a great public speaker? It’s their ability to communicate a message to a large audience. So how can better communication help us in our daily lives?

Effective Communication

The first step in being a better communicator is being a better listener. By practicing effective listening, we learn the needs of the person with whom we are conversing. Once you learn what’s important to the other person, you can use that information to better convey your message. Make it a habit to repeat points that the other person says. In doing this, you will also assure them that you have been paying attention to what they are saying. Listening is 50% of the conversation.

Listen Ears

As a salesman, effective communication was always part of my job. In fact, I attribute nearly all of my sales success to how well I was able to convey my message and now, in my coaching practice, communication is more vital than ever. This week, as you reflect on communication, try practicing your listening skills and see how well your line communication of improves. Like any other skill-building, communication takes practice and the more you practice, the better a communicator you will become.

Championship Minute – Loss

Hey Champions!

This week’s Championship Minute is all about loss. Our family dog, Winnie, a small yorkie, recently passed away. Winnie got sick and within a day, he was gone. His death was sudden and it was a shock to us all. He was with us for ten years and the loss was difficult for our family, especially my daughter, Victoria. Winnie had an annoying bark but he served as the family sentry, alerting us when someone was at the door. Winnie will always be loved and missed dearly.

Visualizing Your Success

img_0263

Hey Champions!

Visualizing where you want to be in life is about communicating your goals to the universe. It is only when you can see your success that you can manifest it. Many years ago, I was in New York and I saw some beautiful paintings by a street artist. I asked her, “How do you paint like that?” She answered, “I see it and then my hands create.”

img_0267

Life is like that. Every building, every bridge, every career, basically everything created by humankind, began with a vision. However, a vision without action is just an unfulfilled dream. If there is something you want to accomplish in your life right now, you must first see it, then believe it, and finally create it.

img_0265

When you wake up in the morning, what is that one burning thing you truly want to accomplish in life? What ignites you and brings you joy? What do you want to create? That is what should motivate you. That is what you should visualize. Communicate it to the cosmos. Then make it happen. You have the innate power to achieve your dreams. Your destiny is in your hands. See it and then let your hands create it.
